Sugat's third exhibition

Dubbed "Superlatives through Lens", it is the third solo photo exhibition of 20-year-old shutterbug Sugat Ratna Shakya, and which is currently taking place at The Art Shop at Durbar Marg. Unlike the previous two of his exhibitions, Sugat this time has experimented with different dimensions, making this exhibition different both in theme and in his creations.
He has presented the collection of his selected work taken during the timeframe of one year. The snaps reflect different moods of the photographer. He has been mainly experimenting with structures, objects and landscape this time whereas there are only three blooming pictures of flowers. He has played around hills, villages, nature,  religions, cultures, life, and people. In gist, the exhibition is a intermixture of different faces of nature and people.

From trying varied angles at capturing the temples and monuments around the Kathmandu Valley and the Garden of Dreams to the shot of a lotus blooming and a picture-perfect village, Sugat has explored his creativity and striven to bring out the essence in his every photograph. And be it early morning or broad daylight or even cold evenings, he has sincerely arrested the time in his assortments that are now hanging on the walls of the gallery.

Some of his stills are bright and lively, reflecting the feelings of festivity among people and at other times the light of sparkling burning diyos casting its magic against the pitch-dark night. These things just add more details to his work of photography.

Talking to City Post, Sugat said, "This time, I've tried to be different; so I've caught up with many things and presented in this exhibition. Everyone, including my teachers, has been very helpful and supportive to me."

"Superlatives through Lens" exhibition and sale will be on display until March 7.

Merely weary

KATHMANDU, MARCH 05, 2008, Falgun 22, 2064   Time: 07:36 NST

KATHMANDU: As any photographer will know, being prepared with your camera equipment just isn’t enough to get the full impact shot. You have to be lucky too. That’s what Sugat Ratna Shakya considers himself. He is currently exhibiting Superlative Through Lens, a year’s worth of work, at the Art Shop. The collection is of diverse subjects captured in diverse angles while Shakya was either out with friends or just bored while waiting to pick up his mum.

“I don’t go for photography trips,” said Shakya. “I don’t wait for the right moment, it just happens.” While many creative photographers tend to stick to one particular subject, Shakya said that’s exactly what he finds very hard to do. The subjects of his images are what everyone passes by in Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel. But he seems to have passed by them just at the right time when the evening lights were in a playful mood with the shadows or the mornings were at their odd moments. His favourite shot of few pairs of feet of street children was taken on one of those moments while he was on a morning walk. “I saw these street children sleeping. Even though people have so much weariness, they can sleep well,” said Shakya. “It’s merely weary, just like the caption.” Based on the photographs, no one will guess he has been doing this as a hobby for three years now. Since starting his hobby, this is his third exhibition. His least favourite pictures are those candid shots of people who are so willing to give him a smile for couple of rupees.

The exhibition will continue until March 7 at the Art Shop with a tour by the artist himself. — HNS
